Photo of the Day - Sanderling

I have been sorting through some of my increasing backlog of images, trying to catch up a little with my website. I had an idea that, as I go through them, I will pick out some of the best and create a regular post of  "Photo of the Day" I'll try and do this every day, but we'll see how it goes.
To start with, here's a winter plumaged Sanderling taken in North Wales a few years ago.

Teal

I photographed these Teal a few months ago. The light was perfect, bringing out their detail and the colours were really enhanced against the blue water. I love photographing Ducks and the Teal is one of my favorites.

Common Whitethroat

Whitethroats are always good fun to photograph, popping up on top of bushes with their rattly song. It's always a bonus if you find one that is reasonably approachable and in a good setting. This was one such bird I spent a few hours with.

Sedge Warblers

I spent a few hours last week photographing Sedge Warblers, or should I say a Sedge Warbler. It's always nice to find an obliging bird that performs well for the camera. There were a few of them around but this one liked to sing from the highest stems of bramble, great for the clean background.

Great Crested Grebes

I have spent some time this spring photographing Great Crested Grebes. The shot that every bird photographer hopes to get of these showy birds is of the weed dance, which they perform during courtship. They pick up weed in their beaks and face each other in the water, they then turn their heads from side to side and usually finish off by lifting right up out of the water. It can be over in seconds and performed anywhere on the water, so getting photographs is tricky. I did manage some courtship shots this year but none of the weed dance. Here are some of the results up to now.
